When Geno Smith passed for a school-record 463 yards Saturday, it still wasn't enough for West Virginia to upset a powerhouse LSU team that achieved its first No. 1 ranking of the season a day later in the polls courtesy of a 47-21 win.
It was, however, more than enough to solidify Smith's status among college football's elite quarterbacks and justify his high school coach's recommendation that Smith attend his alma mater.
"The sky's the limit. Last Saturday night was just the start of him continuing to get better and better," said former West Virginia standout linebacker Damon Cogdell, who coached Smith at Miramar High School in suburban Miami. "To me, he's the Tom Brady of college football. The only difference is he can run. He's a student of the game."
Cogdell played for Don Nehlen at West Virginia in 1997-98 after spending two years in junior college and starring at the same high school Smith attended. Several of his players are on the Mountaineers' roster, including sophomore receivers Stedman Bailey and Ivan McCartney, who combined to catch 14 of Smith's passes for 174 yards and a touchdown against LSU.
Cogdell, though, admits to having a special bond with Smith. Even though Cogdell played defense, he knows how rare it is — and how fortunate he was — to coach and develop a quarterback with the talent to play for any major-college program in the country.
"There's no surprise for me or my staff here. We knew what kind of player he was going to be," said Cogdell, who still refers to Smith as Eugene and not Geno, his more popular moniker. "We speak every Saturday before games. He told me was going to go after them (LSU). He went out there and threw for 463 (yards). That was awesome."
Smith's college choice was his, and his alone, to make. But after speaking a few minutes with Cogdell, who still bleeds blue and gold, it's easy to reach the conclusion that if Cogdell's experience at West Virginia hadn't been a good one, Smith wouldn't be breaking records in Morgantown, and teammates such as Bailey and McCartney — who are tied for second on the team with 23 receptions apiece — wouldn't have joined him there a year later.
Smith was a special player in high school, a prize catch for any college fortunate enough to sign him. A cousin of former University of Miami star running back Melvin Bratton, Smith was a Parade All-American who threw for 3,089 yards and 30 touchdowns and led his team to the Class 6A semifinals as a senior while finishing as the No. 3 passer in Broward Country history.
"Once a Mountaineer, always a Mountaineer," Cogdell boomed over the phone. "Eugene could have gone anywhere. Alabama. Florida State. Florida. All the schools in the Big East wanted him. It was a tough decision to even choose West Virginia, but it was a great decision. Jarrett (Brown) had one year left. Pat White was leaving. Since Jarrett only had one more year, it was like a no-brainer, and his buddy Stedman went there with him.
Cogdell's deep-rooted loyalty to West Virginia football carried over to him intently monitoring the school's rapid-fire coaching changes — from Rich Rodriguez, who recruited Smith along with Bill Stewart, who took over when Rodriguez left for Michigan, to Dana Holgorsen, who suddenly replaced Stewart prior to the start of Smith's junior season — and how those changes could affect his former players.
"I just wanted to make sure the kids were happy," Cogdell said. "One thing about the kids that leave my school is we have a bond that's like a father-son relationship. We wanted to see how spring (football) went. Coach (Stewart) and I still speak on a regular basis. Dana's doing a good job so far with those guys."
Holgorsen, who is picking up where he left off at Oklahoma State in terms of showcasing one of the nation's premier passing attacks, said Smith catches on fast.
Smith, a junior, ranks third nationally in passing yards per game (367.8). He's third in total passing yards (1,471) and fourth in total offense (368.3 yards). Under Smith's direction, West Virginia ranks fourth nationally in passing offense (382.75 yards).
"He's what makes us go offensively," Holgorsen said of Smith. "He's played a lot of football and he knows how to play the game. He has a never-give-up attitude. He gave us a huge spark and had an unbelievable third quarter against LSU (completing 9 of 14 passes for 203 yards and driving the Mountaineers to a pair of touchdowns) and got us within six points (27-21).
"And then immediately, they returned the (kickoff) for a touchdown. But he kept playing even after that. They killed our momentum, but he kept playing. The fact that he ain't ever going to give up is something that I've been saying about him from the beginning.

Batman - Arkham Asylum - The End to a Reign of Comic Folly
By Kellen Beck
Format
Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Style
Third person Action Adventure/Detective
Modes
Single player Campaign, Challenge Mode
Pros
Great graphics, original gameplay, voice acting fans can appreciate, unique blend of combat, detective work/puzzles, and stealth.
Cons
Not much replayability, get stuck every once in a while, Batman died back in January 2009.
Introduction
After years and years of unsatisfying Batman games, Eidos puts out Arkham Asylum, a stunningly brilliant superhero game of which the likes has never been seen before. Batman has always been near and dear to my heart as an avid reader of the comics, and the games have always been sub-par. But come late August, a revolutionary new Batman game set in a unique environment has risen from the depths of nothing: Batman: Arkham Asylum.
The Start Up
The opening scene is grim and dark, as rain pours on the Batmobile, spanning across the city to Arkham Asylum, Gotham's own psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. When you get inside with the Joker in hand, you follow him and a few guards down to the depths of Arkham, where things get interesting. It seems as though the Joker had been planning this from the start, as he escapes his captors and gains control of the Asylum. Starting off with a quick intro to combat with the new FreeFlow(TM) Combat System, you battle several thugs and progress through the grounds, searching for various people and things. You quickly learn about your Detective Mode, where you can see inmates through walls, follow trails of various substances, and find otherwise hidden things, such as vent grates and weak walls. It's an easy game to get into, and can be played respectably by both hardcore and casual gamers.
Gameplay
Of all the superhero games I've played, I must admit that this is the best of them. Never has there been such attention to detail, back stories, and personalities in a comic-based game. I've always been an avid Batman reader up until the day he died (rest in peace, Dark Knight) and know Batman and the Gotham crew like my own friends and family. The game plays like you're classic third person action/adventure game with a small bit of RPG elements. You play as Batman as you go through the Asylum fighting inmates, solving puzzles, and advancing through the story to take back Arkham Asylum from the Joker and his accomplices. Immediately you are thrown into combat with the basic inmates, which is a sort of free flowing punch-and-kick type of combat with counters and take-downs. Starting off you have your Battarang and grapple, the Battarang can be thrown to daze enemies and hit the Riddler's chattering false teeth toys. Pretty soon you learn about your Detective Mode; this is a modification to your sight that shows various things previously mentioned. It's very handy when you are stuck somewhere, before you walk into a room to check for enemies, or want to find hidden things. At some points it's used to follow substance trails such as alcohol in the air, blood and hand prints while tracking people down on the grounds, which you seem to be doing a lot of.
Unlike previous Batman games, Arkham Asylum blends combat, stealth and detective work on a superb level. The stealth is great, although sometimes it feels like you're completely invisible during times in which you shouldn't be. All over the Asylum there are convenient gargoyles in which you can grapple up to to observe a room and stealthily kill inmates who are perusing around waiting for you. To render enemies unconscious (Batman doesn't kill people) in stealth you can do a flying kick form a gargoyle or raised structure and a take down or sneak up and do a sort of silent choke out. If you are caught by armed inmates, you are reduced to hiding up in the shadows and avoiding gunshots which can get pretty annoying.
Since 1948 the Riddler (Edward Nigma) has been using riddles and clues to lead Batman to his meticulously planned crimes. In Arkham Asylum he has left riddles and trophies everywhere and are a nice bonus if you feel like taking a break form the story and do some searches and puzzles. As you collect trophies and solve riddles you gain experience, which you also get from incapacitating inmates and bosses. After an amount of experience is reached, you level up and get to pick an upgrade; upgrades include new weapons like the Sonic Battarang, new combat moves, and armor increases. None of the upgrades are essential to the game, like "you need this upgrade to get to this part in the game", but they do help a lot.
Progressing through the game, you meet a lot of classic characters including the Joker, the Riddler, Commissioner Gordon and Scarecrow. Scarecrow plays an interesting role in the game in the aspects of his psychoactive gas. If you don't know, Scarecrow (real name: Jonathan Crane, a psychiatrist who specializes in fear) uses a variety of toxins that make people hallucinate that their worst fears are real and present. In the game, you encounter his gas multiple times; the room begins to shift, things begin to distort and move, and an eerie music plays as you walk onward to unknowing terror. As you pass through your hallucinations, you eventually come to an event where you have to avoid Scarecrow's gaze. He grows exponentially, and you have to hide and run as he looks for you in a torn apart, circular version of the Asylum. This adds quite an enjoyable twist to the game, and briefly takes you away from the normal game.
Besides the regular story, you can do the Challenge Mode. The Challenge Mode is a series of unlockable, short challenges that involve combating inmates for points and stealthily taking down inmates which is timed. While combating inmates, you earn points through combos, counters, and special take downs, and in the stealth challenges you take down armed inmates as quickly as possible using your various acquired techniques. When you finish, your points are added up and are submitted to the online leaderboards. Challenge Mode is a nice addition if you feel like honing your skills and taking a break from the story.
Overall, the gameplay is phenomenal and Eidos has finally achieved making a good Batman game. There are only a few faults in the game and they don't pop up too often. At some points, there's no clear indication of what to do next, and you're reduced to looking around everywhere, trying to figure out or remember what you have to do. Having said that, there isn't much else to complain about in Arkham Asylum.
Audio/Graphics
The audio of Batman: Arkham Asylum is fantastic, with great voice actors and environment noises such as the music during Scarecrow events. It's good to see that they didn't take any of the recent movie actors for voice acting (apparently Heath Ledger wasn't answering his phone) and instead went with the fantastic voice actors from the Emmy award-winning 90's cartoon show Batman: The Animated Series. There seems to be a general lack of interest from movie actors that are asked to voice games. Besides the voice acting, the music and environment sounds are done wonderfully; every drip of water and intense fighting score just adds to the enjoyment of the game.
As far as graphics go, Arkham Asylum is one of the best looking games that has come out in the past year. The look of the Asylum is grim and rigid, and the whole darkness of the game adds so much depth. Characters are rendered greatly, and the emotions seem life-like at some points. Motion is fluid and overall the game looks great.

2009 Heisman Trophy Winner

View full sizeAlabama running back Trent Richardson (3) carries the ball as Florida linebacker Jelani Jenkins (3, right) closes in on the play in the first quarter Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. (Press-Register, G.M. Andrews)
It could have been the tight shirt. Whatever lies beneath his skin (perhaps millions of tiny horses that make him go) made the tattoos on his biceps roll as he sat down to talk with reporters Monday.
Legendary strength has helped Alabama's star running back power through what had been the nation's fifth-ranked rushing defense Saturday for a 38-10 win at Florida.
With four consecutive 100-yard rushing games, punctuated by his performance in Gainesville, Florida, Richardson has become a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate. Three of his 100-yard games have been against Top 25 teams. He is tied for fifth in the nation in scoring with 10 touchdowns.
Alabama coach Nick Saban offered high praise for Richardson Monday afternoon. He even took a shot at the SEC snub for Offensive Player of the Week honors, which was shared by Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson and Razorbacks wide receiver Jarius Wright.
Wilson guided the Razorbacks to a 42-38 come-from-behind victory against Texas A&M. He also finished 30-for-51 passing for 501 yards, an Arkansas single-game record, and three touchdowns. Wright had 13 receptions for 281 yards, which tied a school record.
Richardson set career highs with 29 carries and 181 yards, including two touchdowns against the Gators, which were ranked 14th in the nation.
"Obviously, Trent Richardson had a fantastic game," Saban said. "I'm sure he would be the first to talk about the offensive line. ... It's hard for me to imagine that anybody could have a better game than Trent Richardson anywhere in the country against good competition. He did a fantastic job."
Alabama offered a soft opening to Richardson's Heisman Trophy campaign with a note on Page 3 of its weekly media information packet to preview Vanderbilt. The words "Heisman Trophy" were preceded by the name Mark Ingram, who became the first Tide player to win the award in 2009.
Alabama compared Richardson's five-game totals from this season with Ingram's first five games in '09. Ingram had 83 carries for 487 yards (5.86 yards per carry) and six touchdowns. Richardson has 96 carries for 622 yards (6.47 ypc) and 10 touchdowns.
Richardson needs 130 yards to surpass his best season. He had 751 yards in '09. He already surpassed the eight touchdowns he had that season, his previous best.
"I try not to buy into it, man," Richardson said when asked about Heisman Trophy consideration. "I try to stay focused and just take one day at a time for real, and make sure I'm doing everything I can to get better."
The award eventually went to quarterback Cam Newton of Auburn. He led the Tigers to a 14-0 season, including an epic 28-27 come-from-behind victory at Alabama, and the 2010 national championship.
Ingam's best performances came in the middle of '09 when he rattled off six 100-yard performances in seven games. He rushed for 99 yards against Tennessee during that span.
"It was going to be very hard to win it in 2010, especially with Mark there and me ... we were splitting carries anyway," Richardson said of his former teammate and close friend. "It was our system last year to be more balanced. ... We're more put together this year. We have more character and leadership this year than we had last year."
The group of Barrett Jones (left tackle), Chance Warmack (left guard), William Vlachos (center), Anthony Steen (right guard) and D.J. Fluker (right tackle) helped Richardson run for big yardage on the Gators between the tackles.
"We did have a lot of really good runs between the tackles this game," Jones said. "It's just a testament to our guys inside and how well they're playing."
Richardson said a lot of those yards came because the offensive line was "getting after those boys" and "leaving me to a defensive back." He also credited his receivers with down-field blocks.
"It's probably the best I've felt after a game," Richardson said of the pounding he endured. "I was very surprised. As far as being sore body-wise, that was probably the best I've felt after a game."
"I'm pretty sure I've got a good chance at his vote," Richardson said, smiling. "He's got to think about somebody from Alabama anyway. And he is my big brother, so I may have a little advantage."

Its funny, reading some of the previous post these so-called bama fans complaining about so called weak points of the Alabama football team. I truly wish you rainy day fans or borderline barners would just stifle yourself. Quit whining this could possibly be the best Alabama football team that ever strapped on helmets.Sure their are some area's that could use improvements, but this team at this point in the 2011 season is a juggernaut,Their strength more than makes up for any weakness they supposedly have. Just sit back shut up and enjoy.Whiny little girls sheesh.
amen.... If you don't like being 5 and 0 no matter how we got there, nothing will please you. All this complaining is negative stuff the team doesn't need. We have coaches to straighten out the team's problems if they have any.
Quiet, Don't tell the Aubies that he is the frontrunner for the Heisman. They say he is "not durable" (snicker) and they held him to less than a hundred " last year" (snicker) when he was second string behind Ingram (snicker - snicker). LOOK OUT AUBIES , HERE COMES TRENT RICHARDSON, THE ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE HIGHEST SCORING, FRONT RUNNER FOR THE HEISMAN, SABAN RECRUITED AND COACHED , TWO HUNDRED TWENTY POUNDS OF BAMA TRAIN RUNNINGBACK, COMING DOWN THE PIKE TO JORDAN HARE LEADING HIS TEAM TO WHUP YOUR A#% ON YOUR OWN D@%^ GRASS!
Whether you agree with those strongly-worded opinions or not, cuzn409 is always willing to throw in his two cents, and we appreciate it.

Mark Ingram Heisman

Mark Ingram is the Only Heisman Trophy Winner From the University of Alabama (Bama) Crimson Tide
By Kim Patel
Mark Ingram is the only Heisman Trophy winner to come out of the University of Alabama (Bama) Crimson Tide football program despite the storied football history of the Tuscaloosa, Alabama based school. Mark Ingram won the first Heisman Trophy for the University of Alabama on December 12, 2009. Interestingly after no sophomores won the award for the first 72 years it was issued Ingram became the third consecutive sophomore to win the award after Tim Tebow of the University of Florida in 2007 and Sam Bradford of the University of Oklahoma in 2008.
The University of Alabama began playing college football in 1892 and in over a century of play the football program has amassed an impressive resume of accomplishments. The most prominent of the achievements is 13 national championships with the most recent one coming on January 7, 2010 in a 37-21 victory over the University of Texas at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Producing 44 consensus All-American players, winning 26 conference titles, and boasting 31 postseason bowl victories all speak volumes about the caliber of play at the University of Alabama.
The consistent track record of team success exhibited by the Crimson Tide makes it all the more peculiar that the school had never had a Heisman Trophy winner before December of 2009. The Heisman is commonly accepted to be the most prized individual award in all of college football. For the last 75 years the Heisman Trophy has been given annually to the top college football player in the nation. For a football program like Alabama to only have one recipient of the award while other hallowed institutions like the University of Notre Dame, Ohio State University, and the University of Southern California all have seven apiece is quite surprising to most sports fans.
Prior to Mark Ingram securing the prize for the Crimson Tide eight players from the school on nine occasions had finished as finalist in the top five of the voting. Those nine players are:
Joe Kilgrow (1937) finished 5th as a running back Harry Gilmer (1945) finished 5th as a running back Harry Gilmer (1947) finished 5th as a running back Pat Trammell (1961) finished 5th as a quarterback Lee Roy Jordan (1962) finished 4th as a linebacker Johnny Musso (1971) finished 5th as a running back Terry Davis (1972) finished 5th as a quarterback David Palmer (1993) finished 3rd as a wide receiver Jay Parker (1994) finished 5th as a quarterback
While University of Alabama football fans are primarily concerned with winning national championships whether they all admit it or not the folks that cheer on the crimson and gray are thankful that the Heisman Trophy drought was finally brought to an end thanks to Mark Ingram.
Kim, the author of this article, expects that when Mark Ingram signs his first NFL contract one of his first purchases might be a University of Alabama golf bag. Prior to being selected as the number one pick in the 2010 NFL Draft Sam Bradford, the sophomore Heisman winner that immediately preceded Ingram, stating that a University of Oklahoma golf bag was something that he looked forward to buying as one of his first purchases to be paid for by his new NFL contract. Fans considering buying a college themed golf bag are encouraged to check out the links in the previous two sentences.

Force Unleashed 2

Star Wars: the force unleashed II review
By Levi Boley
Ah the force unleashed II. A game I've been waiting for a name than to see the message back on E3. I spent hours watching all the latest movie trailers and videos to release the game before. I'm going to hit a few plot details below, so beware of spoilers.
II Unleashed a force large enough. The graphics have been improved greatly, combat mechanics showcase a host of new controls, the controls that provide power grab respond better in General. Naval forces in the newly added are awe inspiring view. It is great that Lucas Arts also took time to iron out a lot of bugs and problems that seemed to be the original.
One thing I found frustrating was how easily the game. Most games use different mechanics in their now more difficult, such as additional enemy waves forever, only allowing the use of certain items in battle, or increasing the complexity of AI. Not in force unleashed II. Difficulties even harder, just a storm troopers can one Starkiller Shute. This can be very frustrating for the fans who can be a bit rusty on the original, out of practice. He started the game difficulty is hard and played for 30 minutes before I need to go to just get past the first few levels. Players will encounter massive groups of Knights with sane damage ratio, so be careful fired an initial difficulty selected.
The story of the Force Unleashed II involves a journey of Starkiller to expose is really dead. The game leads the player to believe this is the original rubber Starkiller, but the Force Unleashed II continuously kept me guessing. Starkiller occasionally hunted by foresight to tie into the first game. This gives new players a nice introduction to the original plot, serves refreshing veterans.
There are scenes Starkiller assistance General Kote defeating of Golorg at 100 ft or mid air combat in the fall of the feet. The game has Starkiller assistance States lowered the vmamct Empire, bringing peace to the universe. This is characteristic of all travel wars.
At the end of the game, after the battle the boss awesomely nasal and challenging, was standing with a choice ... Dark side or light side. Both have alternative extensions, which add replayability of the Force Unleashed II for a while, I'm not sure if this justifies alone second playthrough.
A huge improvement over the Force Unleashed II, a total of great Star Wars title from Lucas Arts. I'm having one problem during my time with the Force Unleashed II. During the last battle of the boss, a strange mask problem caused the game to crash. I was still able to access the game continued, XBM, but I couldn't move Starkiller attacking the boss, forcing a restart of the game.
The biggest Gripe I have about the Force Unleashed II is that it takes 6 hour. Die hard for Star Wars fans actually used the money to book and purchase the Force Unleashed II is about to be bmanami. Like the original, there is no online play or frankly any type of replay value that is not a single alternative finish and DLC. This is a great game, don't get me wrong. Lucas Arts has been many improvements to the original, but a short journey, not a lack of online play will replayablity Force Unleashed second acquisition is difficult to justify.

Alan Belcher Tattoo

UFC 135 saw Jake Ellenberger beat Jake Shields in stunning fashion, all starting with a hard knee that went through the latter’s mandible, all the way to the back of his cranium, proving Ellenberger needs to fight the winner of GSP v Condit. Yet that’s not what got me into the event. What got me stoked was Alan ‘The Talent’ Belcher. The reason? In spite of fighters like Aldo, Cruz, GSP, Anderson Silva, Bones Jones, dos Santos and more, the guy I’d like to fight like is Alan Belcher.
Several things stand out with Belcher, some tangible, some intangible, some superficial, some deep. This is an entertainment sport, where setting yourself apart can raise the paycheck. Belcher does that in spades, in all of the categories above.
Alan Belcher has to be the whitest of the white fighters. He reminds me of Ray Mancini, the boxer from the 80s. Their stark whiteness is as mesmerizing as a perfect tan. In spite of sporting the worst tattoo I’ve ever seen---the bloated, misshapen Johnny Cash on his shoulder----Belcher’s alabaster skin all but glows under the lights.
Belcher’s choice of fight shorts are unlike any the other fighters wear. Most fighters wear ones that look like bicycle shorts or board shorts. Belcher’s inspired design mixes boxing and Muay Thai, and are a cut above the rest. And who doesn’t feel good when you’re dressed to the nines? My favorite ones were hot pink, for the sheer intimidation factor alone. And who among you knows that before WWII, pink was considered manly? It was Hitler and the SS that turned that color from what it was to how it is now perceived, by pinning pink triangles to gay concentration camp inmates.
Belcher isn’t the best striker in the UFC, but his kick boxing style, shaped by former world champion kick boxer Duke Roufus, wields equal power from elbows, fists, knees and shins, and commands respect. Belcher’s take down defense, as witnessed against a great take down and ground fighter in Jason MacDonald, affords The Talent ample time to punish in the stand-up, and his ground and pound is stellar. Belcher TKOed MacDonald from the guard, which is a very difficult thing to do to anyone, given the physics and mechanics.
Belcher suffered a retinal tear while training in Brazil last summer, an injury that can do worse than end a career. But it isn’t something that can’t be fixed. Sugar Ray Leonard suffered one, but healed in time to fight and beat Marvelous Marvin Hagler in 1987, a fact that supposedly inspired Belcher in his recovery.
Belcher’s last loss was a split decision to Akiyama, who subsequently lost to Leben, Bisping and Belfort. You can’t read too much into this, but it is sobering enough to refrain from predicting Belcher getting the belt any time soon. I sure look forward to Belcher continuing to improve, though, and to the fights Dana White and Joe Silva plan for his rise and possible shot at Anderson Silva. As for Belcher, there's a gleam in that healed eye.

Always had respect for this guy for building up three different teams into National Champs (Miami) or into usually solid squads (Louisville, FAU).
Seriously, I think we all knew that they would come in looking to punch us in the mouth. Sure enough, just when you thought the game was in the bag, they scored twice, and quickly.
Some were bogus IMO, and the officiating was....well, typical Sun Belt junk and mostly not in our favor. We shot ourselves in the foot with too many flags, again.
Under Bustle, I feel confident that we probably would have given up and had a complete collapse and lost that game. Hud has these guys playing hard until the very end and the offense made the plays in the 2 min offense to get it done. Blaine looked like Manning running that offense with 1:45 on the clock. Working the sidelines and throwing perfect passes. The catch by Harry "Power to the" Peoples to get us in chip shot range for Brett Baer, was a highlight reel catch.
Speaking of Peoples. He had a break out game and looks like a rising star as he and Blaine are working very very well together. IMO, this will only help our running game as opposing defenses will have to watch for Green, Lawson, AND Peoples. Not to mention Surgent. What a weapon he is.
I didn't go to the game in 2009 (couldn't make it), but the game in 2007, man, FAU played reaaallly dirty, I mean ridiculous. With that said, maybe because they're more humble now, but the FAU team I messed with last night seemed less thuggish. But thats just my opinion.

Heisman Trophy

Russell Wilson is winning both personal and team accolades. (Wikimedia Commons)While some teams made statements and various individuals staked their claim as legitimate Heisman Trophy candidates, others showed they aren’t quite ready for primetime. Here’s a list of three winners and three losers from college football action Saturday.
After a highly impressive dual-threat performance Saturday, Wilson showed that he not only is arguably the Heisman Trophy favorite, but that unbeaten Badgers are the real deal.
Passing for 255 yards and two touchdowns on just 20 attempts, Wilson displayed the efficiency he has shown all year as his team obliterated previously eighth-ranked Nebraska 48-17.
With a seemingly manageable schedule ahead, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Wisconsin run the table, and Wilson strike the Heisman pose.
Though the nation may not exactly have their eyes on WSU, the Cougars improbable 31-27 victory over Colorado is the latest indication that they are back from the depths of a 5-32 three-year stretch.
Trailing by 10, WSU scored twice in the last 2:35, getting the winner on Marquess Wilson’s 63-yard game-winning TD. Led by Wilson and his average of 26.2 yards per reception, the Cougars possess an explosive offense. Now 3-1 and with UCLA next, a bowl game is definitely possible.
With the toughest part of their schedule in the rearview mirror, Clemson is the frontrunner to represent the Atlantic Division in the ACC Championship.
An exciting team to watch, the Tigers feature electric freshman playmaker Sammy Watkins and perhaps the country’s most excitable coach in Dabo Sweeney.
After getting demolished by Alabama Saturday, it’s clear the Gators still have a long way to go before they can again be considered national title contenders.
To make matters worse, they lost starting quarterback John Brantley to injury and will have to start a true freshman when they travel to LSU and take on the nation’s best defense.
Not only is NC State a middling ACC team after a loss to Georgia Tech dropped them to 2-3, the Wolfpack have to be cringing about their decision to let Russell Wilson go.
After starting for two seasons, Wilson was unceremoniously informed by Coach Tom O’Brien that he would not be welcomed back for his redshirt senior season due to missing spring ball in order to pursue a professional baseball career.
So too might be the Heisman aspirations of standout running back Marcus Lattimore (at right), who gained only 66 yards on the ground this week.
If the Gamecocks are to succeed throughout the rest of this season, they will have to find improvement at the quarterback position, where Stephen Garcia has been abysmal. In other news, Steve Spurrier continues to be scrutinized for allowing Garcia to play after five suspensions from the team.

Turner Gill

Kansas safety Keeston Terry celebrates his interception against Texas Tech during the first quarter on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at Kivisto Field.
A little more than 24 hours after watching his team squander a 20-0 lead and drop its second straight game, Kansas University football coach Turner Gill made a bold statement.
“I thought we did make a lot more tackles,” he said. “We obviously still didn’t make enough. But (we play) some good teams and some good players, and they’re gonna make you miss some tackles. There were some good things. There just weren’t enough.”
Gill also pointed to the individual play of safety Keeston Terry and linebacker Malcom Walker as other areas of improvement for the Kansas defense. Terry, a red-shirt freshman, tied for the team lead in tackles with 12 and also picked up KU’s first interception of the season. Walker, a junior-college transfer, finished tied for second with eight tackles.
Despite playing his best game of the year, Terry was not willing to go as far as his head coach in saying the defense played better Saturday. The free safety from Blue Springs, Mo., said he sensed a drop in energy once Texas Tech started rolling and that the Jayhawks would have to address that and play with passion for four quarters before real progress can be claimed.
“I don’t know if someone’s gotta light a fire under us or what,” Terry said. “But we just have to figure it out. If not, the same result’s gonna happen over and over again.”
Like Gill, defensive coordinator Vic Shealy said he thought the KU defense made progress Saturday. But Shealy also said his unit took a few steps back at times.
Asked how he expected that to happen: “It’s not rocket science,” Shealy said. “It’s about identifying what they’re doing, making a decision why the breakdown occurred and then drawing it up so your players see visually what happened and how you’re gonna correct it. Is it a call or is it just execution? A lot of it’s just executing better.”
With the frustration of another lopsided outcome fresh in their minds, Gill was asked Sunday if the message that his defense was improving had become a tough sell.
Miller, who caught a 25-yard pass on the second play from scrimmage against Texas Tech, did not play after the reception because of a tweaked hamstring. Although the Jayhawks continue to evaluate Miller’s injury, Gill said he planned to have him this weekend.
“He’s fine,” Gill said. “He’s going to be available. We just don’t know how much he’s going to be able to go. We gotta make some decisions about whether we want to do it on a week-to-week basis or try to give him a little bit longer time to heal. But he’ll be available.”
“There’s no one at this point in time that I can say is gonna be out for this next ballgame,” said Gill of the Jayhawks’ 2:30 p.m. Saturday match-up at Oklahoma State. “We came out of here pretty well as far as injuries.”
Oklahoma State enters the game ranked sixth in the nation, with victories over Louisiana-Lafayette, Arizona, Tulsa and Texas A&M. The Cowboys were off last weekend, giving them two weeks to prepare for the Jayhawks.

Selects the Honoree Heisman
By Andy McCarthy
Selection process for the annual recipient of the Heisman Memorial Trophy award is subject to policies established by the Heisman Trophy trust. Representatives of the main determinants of 870 media title, based on the idea of all the experts, sports journalists, in particular, they have enough at the arc of the game, its participants are central to make informed, determinations also have enough competent, Honorable Athletics remain skewed their elections unfair. On their voting ballots, United States is divided into six regions: West, Midwest, mid-Atlantic, Southwest, South, North-East. Among the representatives of the media and sport, 870 Heisman Trophy trust selects six to serve as representatives cut Earth, which then distributes the total amount of 870 media reps pointing into sixths appoint a representative country for every country in the region for their-who decides in turn voters for State set up so that voters are distributed evenly between media for 145 to be allocated to all areas of the region-although each zone consists of not actually sixth of the nation. (Far West in the middle of the West, have populations larger than 16.7% of the votes allocated to each of their areas, while the Southwest Atlantic Ocean to the South, northeast of each have populations smaller than 16.7% of the votes allocated to each of their areas in the far West, in fact has the largest percentage of the population in the country, on 21 percent, to the Northeast has the smallest percentage of the nation's population compared to other areasWith only 12%.) However, after every 886 of media representatives should be divided evenly between the regions, each State then allotted number of votes among the 132 assigned its area based on its size and number of media outlets so that the larger State as Texas has more delegated voters from smaller like sort.
Then all winners of past Heisman Memorial Trophy Awards, now includes another Heisman consideration, respect also place their votes. In addition, since 1999, the results of a poll of public spheres as one additional sound-fans also will be allowed to vote in a survey by the survey results to ESPN.com, the subqueue are factored into that voting process that has as a single. ESPN commentators may also vote for their choice.
Voting is now online. Each ballot is based on a 3-2-1 top ranking points system selects a given three selects-potential takes one point like the honoree to choose a third option, select two votes as sec, select three votes in the first choice. Because the system was implemented to prevent a particularly earthquake cut manner in the process of election, each ballot must be specified for all three options, and he was considered a ratings ballot void if unsigned drivers by pointing to his own. The player who receives the highest total after a final tabulation becomes official honoree of the year to receive the Heisman Memorial Trophy award. Deloitte has extensive, accounting firm, has a tabulation of the votes as soon as they are sent. The firm also responsible for mailing ballots, voting instructions to all voters, although voting online secure site created and maintained by the firm, also allowed as an option since 2002.
Historically, received a selection process of Heisman winner biased criticism against West Coast players, such as no players from the West received the honor among the twenty years after the starting tailback for the University of Southern California's Marcus won in 1981, before the start of the USC quarterback Carson Palmer won the sports Prize in 2002. Since 2000, three players from the University of Southern California received the Heisman-but a single winner of West Coast not won from outside of USC since quarterback Jim Plunkett, Stanford University won in 1970. In 2009, and ran Stanford's Toby Gerhart came closest, rating second tabulations that same year the closest voting in Heisman, with only 28 point margin. The deviation from the West Coast is most often attributed to the idea of voters from East Coast shows many games on the West Coast due to hmchshlot including the time zone difference (because the three regions of Heisman fall in Eastern time, West Coast Air Games very late during the day, the East Coast), details of the contracts for television coverage, and differences of nature and culture. Other complaints were about bias, with accusations selection process itself inherently skewed because voters are distributed evenly across the regions, although even the most significant differences in population size or number of Division I football teams.

Nebraska's Heisman Hero
By Ariel Abbott
Like many Heisman Trophy winners before him, Eric Crouch has found out stardom in the college ranks is not a guaranteed ticket to pro football fame and fortune.
Crouch, out of Nebraska, was voted the most outstanding college player in 2001. The Cornhuskers have produced many offensive "greats" but, by the time Crouch left the school, the quarterback had surpassed them all, leaving a trail of new records in the NU books. Among other highs, he is the NU career total offense leader (7,915 yards), holds the record for most career rushing yards by a quarterback, single game total offense record (360 yards), is the touchdown leader (88), and set an NCAA record for most career rushing TD's by a quarterback (59).
After trials with the Rams, Packers and Chiefs, Eric accepted the NFL consensus he lacked size at quarterback and was sent packing to NFL Europe for the 2005 season as a safety. He didn't agree. Stepping down from glory is jagged pill to swallow.
Eric Crouch wants to be a professional quarterback.
The Canadian Football League is giving him that chance. He impressed the Toronto Argonaunts enough during an off season trial, he'll come to camp with a full shot at backing up starter Damon Allen.
Nebraska's star isn't the first quarterback of note to get his career in gear playing in the CFL. Wally Moon comes to mind. The Argonauts themselves have had Joe Theisman and 1984 Heisman Trophy winning Doug Flutie at the helm in the past. Eric Crouch isn't even the first Nebraska Heisman winner to get his start up north. Johnny Rodgers was a first round draft pick in 1973 but he turned down San Diego in favor of Montreal.
Who knows? If things go well for Eric Crouch up there in Toronto, he might never want to come back.

Cedric Benson

Wednesday, September 28, 2011
0 comments

Cedric Benson and his attorney David Cornwell expressed numerous objections to the running back's three-game suspension in a hearing with NFL official Harold Henderson on Tuesday, a source familiar with the case told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Benson also filed a non-injury grievance challenging the application of the NFL's conduct policy at a time when there was a lockout, no collective bargaining agreement, no union, and Benson was not an employee of any team. Benson was arrested in July and charged with misdemeanor assault after being involved in an altercation with a former roommate in Austin, Texas.

Benson believes that the interpretation and enforceability of the side-letter agreement between the NFL Players Association and the NFL must be resolved either through the non-injury grievance or by the National Labor Relations Board before a decision can be made in the disciplinary appeal. A source confirmed to ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen on Sunday that Benson has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the NFLPA with the NLRB regarding the side-letter agreement.

It was unclear whether the league could fine or suspend players who got in trouble during the NFL's 4½-month lockout, when there was no collective bargaining agreement. The NFLPA had decertified as part of the labor dispute.
In the side-letter agreement, the league and the NFLPA eventually agreed that eight players (including Benson) could be disciplined for incidents in the offseason, while 25 others would not be.

"There were some things in the CBA that we were not made aware of, which is really no surprise," Benson told The Associated Press. "That kind of falls on the (players' association). You would think they're here to support you and have your back -- that's what a union does. I guess in my case, it's different."
Benson was arrested during the summer of 2010 over an alleged bar fight in Austin and charged with misdemeanor assault. Benson met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell after the incident and was not disciplined.
Benson reached a plea agreement to settle both the 2010 and 2011 court cases and served five days in a Texas jail before this season began.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Health officials say as many as 16 people have died from possible listeria illnesses traced to Colorado cantaloupes, the deadliest food outbreak in more than a decade.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that 72 illnesses, including 13 deaths, are linked to the tainted fruit. State and local officials say they are investigating three additional deaths that may be connected.
The death toll released by the CDC

Tuesday — including newly confirmed deaths in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas — surpassed the number of deaths linked to an outbreak of salmonella in peanuts almost three years ago. Nine people died in that outbreak.
The CDC said Tuesday that they have confirmed two deaths in Texas and one death each in in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Last week the CDC reported two deaths in Colorado, four deaths in New Mexico, one in Oklahoma and one in Maryland.

New Mexico officials said Tuesday they are investigating a fifth death, while health authorities in Kansas and Wyoming said they too are investigating additional deaths possibly linked to the tainted fruit.

Listeria is more deadly than well-known pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, though those outbreaks generally cause many more illnesses. Twenty-one people died in an outbreak of listeria poisoning in 1998 traced to contaminated hot dogs and possibly deli meats made by Bil Mar Foods, a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corp. Another large listeria outbreak in 1985 killed 52 people and was linked to Mexican-style soft cheese.

Listeria generally only sickens the elderly, pregnant women and others with compromised immune systems. The CDC said the median age of those sickened is 78 and that one in five who contract the disease can die.
Dr. Robert Tauxe of the CDC says the number of illnesses and deaths will probably grow in coming weeks because the symptoms of listeria don't always show up right away. It can take four weeks or more for a person to fall ill after eating food contaminated with listeria.

"That long incubation period is a real problem," Tauxe said. "People who ate a contaminated food two weeks ago or even a week ago could still be falling sick weeks later."

CDC reported the 72 illnesses and deaths in 18 states. Cases of listeria were reported in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The most illnesses were reported in Colorado, which has seen 15 sickened. Fourteen illnesses were reported in Texas, 10 in New Mexico and eight in Oklahoma.

The outbreak has been traced to Jensen Farms in Holly, Colo., which recalled the tainted cantaloupes earlier this month. The Food and Drug Administration said state health officials had found listeria in cantaloupes taken from grocery stores in the state and from a victim's home that were grown at Jensen Farms. Matching strains of the disease were found on equipment and cantaloupe samples at Jensen Farms' packing facility in Granada, Colo.

FDA, which investigates the cause of foodborne outbreaks, has not released any additional details on how the contamination may have happened. The agency says its investigation is ongoing.

The Rocky Ford-brand cantaloupes from Jensen Farms were shipped from July 29 through Sept. 10 to Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.

The recalled cantaloupe may be labeled "Colorado Grown," "Distributed by Frontera Produce," "Jensenfarms.com" or "Sweet Rocky Fords." Not all of the recalled cantaloupes are labeled with a sticker, the FDA said.
Unlike many pathogens, listeria bacteria can grow at room temperatures and even refrigerator temperatures. The FDA and CDC recommend anyone who may have one of the contaminated cantaloupes throw it out immediately and clean and sanitize any surfaces it may have touched.

About 800 cases of listeria are found in the United States each year, according to CDC, and there usually are three or four outbreaks. Most of these are traced to deli meat and soft cheeses, where listeria is most common.
Produce has rarely been the culprit, but federal investigators say they have seen more produce-related listeria illnesses in the past two years. It was found in sprouts in 2009 and celery in 2010.

While most healthy adults can consume listeria with no ill effects, it can kill the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. It is also dangerous to pregnant women because it easily passes through to the fetus. Dr. Tauxe of the CDC said the type of listeria linked to the cantaloupes is not one that is commonly associated with pregnancy-associated illnesses, however. State and federal health authorities have not definitively linked any miscarriages, stillbirths or infant illnesses to the current outbreak.

Symptoms of listeria include fever and muscle aches, often with other gastrointestinal symptoms. Victims often become incapacitated and unable to speak.

Debbie Frederick said her mother knew something was wrong when her father, 87-year-old William Thomas Beach, collapsed at his home in Mustang, Okla. and couldn't get up. He died a few days later, on Sept. 1. The family later learned his death was linked to eating the cantaloupe and sued Jensen Farms.
"First you just kind of go into shock," said Frederick. "Then it settles in that he would still be alive if this hadn't happened. It's a life, for what?"

Antonio Gates

Antonio Gates was born June 18, 1980 in Detroit Michigan. Ever since Gates was a young child it was obvious that he was going to be a great athlete in one sport or another. Standing at 6 foot 4 inches and weighing 260 pounds, he has all of the physical skills that a top notch NFL tight end could need. When you add this to the mental aspect of his game, it is no wonder why many people consider him to be the best tight end in the game.

Gates is a bit different than the rest of the players that you see in the NFL. Before his rookie season in the league, he had not played in an organized football game since high school. Gates decided that he wanted to go to Michigan State University to play both basketball and football, but when he was told by then Coach Nick Saban that he could only play football he decided to transfer. Subsequently, this led him to Eastern Michigan University then two junior colleges until he finally settled down at Kent State University in Ohio.

After his college basketball career was over, NBA scouts felt that at 6'4" he was not big enough to make it in the league. In turn, he began to focus his energy on getting ready for the NFL. Nearly 20 teams attended his workout, and the San Diego Chargers were so impressed that they signed him to a contract.

After a slow rookie season in 2004, Gates quickly became an offensive threat. Throughout the next three seasons combined he caught 241 passes for 2,989 yards and 32 touchdowns. This was good enough to land him in the Pro Bowl each of these three years, and also establish himself as a top offensive threat. For a guy that did not play college football, Gates is doing just fine in the NFL.

Carl Sagan

The late astronomer Carl Sagan. (EDUARDO CASTANEDA - AP) With two other planet-finder missions on hold, the Kepler spacecraft may be the only one left that could find another Earth out there and answer that most fundamental human question: Are we alone?

While Madrigal points out tha $20 million is the “cost of fighting a few hours of the war in Afghanistan,” these are belt-tightening times, and influential supporters such as astronomer Carl Sagan, who died in 1996, are no longer around.

(Sagan, the American astronomer, author, TV host and pioneer of exobiology and the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, would likely roll over in his grave if he thought the government would stop funding the search for other planets.)
The Kepler spacecraft has so far discovered hundreds of planetary candidates by watching 145,000 stars for variations in their brightness, which can help flag the presence of an extrasolar planet.

On Tuesday, BBC reported that two new exoplanets were spotted by amateur stargazers who analyzed images generated by Kepler last year.
“It will be one of those small bureaucratic losses that hardly anyone notices,” Madrigal writes. “But it will be yet another sign of the fraying of our democracy that we can't fund (cheap) research into the most fundamental questions of human existence.”

Cornel West

Dr. Cornel West has become the third celebrity in the past 24 hours to visit the Occupy Wall Street protests in Zuccotti Park. Michael Moore and Susan Sarandon both paid their respects to the demonstrators earlier today and last night.

West, a professor at Princeton, recently said on MSNBC, "The top 10 percent got 100 percent of income growth. That's pathological. You can't sustain a democracy when you have that kind of wealth inequality."

There is talk that the Occupy Wall Street protestors will attend tonight's Community Board 1 meeting to coordinate their activity with the wishes of its members, but that could not immediately be confirmed with the organizers.
Meanwhile, more than 700 United and Continental pilots are protesting the bungled merger of their companies near Zuccotti Park on Wall Street. IBT reports, "the pilots believe that the company needs to focus on contract negotiations instead of changing the logo on the cocktail napkins." They marched in silence in their uniforms, in contrast with the Wall Street Occupiers because, as one pilot said, they "were professionals and very disciplined."

Postal workers also took to Lower Manhattan to protest the massive cuts and closings that the USPS is bracing for. A from the livestream, it appear that members of Occupy Wall Street joined the postal workers, but the protests were largely self-segregated.

Chris Christie

In a speech at the Reagan library in California on Tuesday night, the New Jersey governor laid out a broad vision for the country and positioned himself as nothing short of the anti-Obama.

He offered no concrete words about reports that he is rethinking his decision not to run for president, but did nothing to quiet that speculation, either, telling a woman who offered an impassioned plea for him to run that he was “touched.”
“That reason has to reside inside me,” he said. “My answer to you is just this: I take it in and I’m listening to every word of it, and I feel it.”

Asked by a previous questioner whether he would re-consider running, he urged the man to view web videos of his repeated denials. Before the man could follow up, he shut him down by essentially threatening him with a rhetorical joust.
The only other time Christie alluded to the presidential race was when he took a pretty direct shot at Texas Gov. Rick Perry, criticizing Perry’s contention that anyone who opposes in-state tuition for the children of illegal immigrants is “heartless.”

Aside from that, Christie used his platform to criticize the president as weak, ineffective and sacrificing his core principles in the name of political expediency, Christie contrasted all of that with his own record as governor of New Jersey.
“In New Jersey over the last 20 months, you have actually seen divided government that is working,” Christie said. “Being a mayor, being a governor, being a president means leading by taking risk on the most important issues of the day. It has happened in Trenton.”

The speech amounted to a campaign-style speech that sounded suspiciously like that of a candidate trying to make an election a choice between him and his opponent.

In fact, Christie not only compared himself to Obama; he actually said his governance in New Jersey has served as a model for what other states have done. More than selling a set of values, Christie was selling himself.
After talking about his own achievements in balancing a budget with a Democratic legislature and making the tough decisions, Christie then turned to the president, who has to contend with a Republican-controlled House in Washington.

“We watch a president who once talked about the courage of his convictions, but still has yet (to find) the courage to lead,” Christie said, adding: “And still we continue to wait and hope that our president will finally stop being a bystander in the Oval Office.”

Perhaps better than any presidential candidate has, Christie used the forum Tuesday night to launch a broadside against Obama, shunning the usual attacks on the president’s health care bill and the size of government for a more personal attack.

Hs strongest moment was when he quoted Obama’s speech to the 2004 Democratic National Convention, when the then-Senate candidate talked about the country not being divided between black and white or liberal and conservative, but being one United States of America.
“Seven years later, President Obama prepares to divide our nation to achieve re-election,” Christie said. “This is not a leadership style, this is a re-election strategy.”

In the end, Christie was either setting himself up as a potential candidate in 2012 or making himself into a very important surrogate and somebody we will be talking about as a future presidential candidate in the years to come.
Bachmann camp calls Iowa must-win: Days after her former campaign manager said so, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) is acknowledging that she must win Iowa to stay in the presidential race.

In a four-minute strategy video, Bachmann’s new campaign manager, Keith Nahigian, says “she has to win Iowa and move on from there.”
None of this is a surprise, but ex-campaign manager Ed Rollins phrased the same sentiment a bit less kindly on MSNBC last week, saying his old boss did not have the resources to compete past the first state right now.

Utah lawmakers pick preferred map: We’ve got an idea about what the new congressional map in Utah will look like, and it looks like Republicans won’t create Democratic district in the Salt Lake City area.

The map selected by the state legislature’s redistricting committee would put all of the state capital in one district, but would combine it with all of western and southern Utah and put other more Democratic areas into other districts.
It would also give Rep. Jim Matheson (D-Utah) a very different district from the one he has now. While he would get more of Salt Lake City, he would have to woo lots more new voters in western Utah. His current district starts in Salt Lake City and stretches east before roping in southern Utah.

The question going into redistricting was whether the GOP would give Matheson a safe district. He has turned aside every effort to defeat him in a very conservative district, and some suggested giving him a tough shake make lure him into a statewide run, where polling shows him competitive.
“Based on the map I have seen, a race by me for Governor or for the Senate is still on the table,” Matheson said in a statement to Roll Call.

Meanwhile, the National Republican Congressional Committee has added a candidate for the state’s new 4th district, state Rep. Carl Wimmer, to its Young Guns program for promising candidates. Wimmer was added along with Beth Anne Rankin, who is running a repeat bid for retiring Rep. Mike Ross’s (D-Ark.) seat.

Perry’s lieutenant governor, who is the frontrunner in the Texas GOP Senate primary, disagrees with Perry on in-state tuition for the children of illegal immigrants. All the latest on the presidential primary calendar, from the New York Times’ Jeff Zeleny. Meanwhile, the AP says a new rule could draw out the nominating contest.

Christmas Island

The crew of an asylum seeker boat telephoned West Australian police to alert them to the vessel's imminent arrival at Christmas Island.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the patrol boat HMAS Albany, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted the vessel on Wednesday morning.

The caller said the boat was five nautical miles northeast of Christmas Island and did not claim the vessel was in distress, official sources told AAP.
It is the fourth boat to be intercepted since the High Court on August 21 quashed the federal government's Malaysia people-swap deal.

It's understood it is not the first time a boat crewman has alerted WA police of its impending arrival, and in the past telephone calls have been put through to a range of agencies including customs, the immigration department and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard is continuing talks with independents MPs to get amendments to migration laws through parliament to put the Malaysian deal on solid legal ground.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said the government should accept the coalition's migration law amendment - which would ensure offshore processing was only done in UN refugee convention signatory countries - and look for an alternative solution to Malaysia.

Labor has rejected Nauru as an option, citing immigration department advice that people-smugglers saw it as an easy entry-way to Australia.
"Our amendments provide greater protection for those who would be processed offshore and equally provide protection against challenges in the courts," Mr Morrison told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.
